The following Government of Canada scholarship programs support candidates from abroad who wish to study, conduct research or gain professional development in Canada on a short-term basis:

  • Emerging Leaders of the Americas Program (ELAP):

  • Canada-Chile Leadership Exchange Scholarship:
    Undergraduate & graduate from Chile
  • Canada-CARICOM Leadership Scholarship Program (CCLSP):

Emerging Leaders of the Americas Program (ELAP)

Eligible Countries: Caribbean: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos;
Central America: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama;
North America: Mexico; or
South America: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela.

Note: Undergraduate students and graduate students wishing to take UAlberta courses must be from an exchange partner institution and must be nominated for exchange to the University of Alberta. Students from non-exchange partner institutions may only conduct research at UAlberta.

Scholarship Value & Duration:
  • $7,200 CAN for undergraduate or graduate students for 4 months or one academic term of study or research; or
  • $9,700 CAN for graduate students for 5-6 months of study or research.

Canada-Chile Leadership Exchange Scholarship

Canada-CARICOM Leadership Scholarship Program (CCLSP)

Scholarship Value & Duration:
  • $7,200 CAN for college, undergraduate or graduate students for four months or one academic term of study or research;
  • $9,700 CAN for graduate students for a period of five or six months of study or research; or
  • $14,700 CAN for undergraduate and college students for a period of eight months of study or research.

Canada-CARICOM Faculty Leadership Program

Eligible Countries:
Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos.
Level of Exchange:
Faculty or international liaison officers/managers from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) with short-term opportunities for professional development, graduate study or research.
Scholarship Value & Duration:
  • $2,700 CAN for faculty members for two to three weeks of course work or research as part of their professional development;
  • $2,700 CAN for international directors, managers or administrators for two to three weeks of course work, or for a practicum in the area of internationalization of postsecondary institutions or student mobility as part of their professional development; or
  • $9,700 CAN for faculty members for five to six months of study or research at the graduate level.

2017/2018 Timeline, Application Process, & Required Documents for the University of Alberta

  • Deadline for Submission of Application & Supporting Documents to the University of Alberta International (UAI): April 18, 2017
  • Deadline for Submission of Application & Supporting Documents by UAI to the Government of Canada: 
    April 25, 2017
  • Expected results notification to Canadian Institutions: June 2017
  • Candidate’s studies or research may commence as early as July 1, 2017 but no later than February 1, 2018.

Candidates Wishing to Register in Courses at UAlberta

Note: Undergraduate or graduate students wishing to take UAlberta courses must be from an exchange partner institution with a current Student Exchange Agreement and must be nominated for exchange to the University of Alberta. Students from non-exchange partner institutions may only conduct research at UAlberta.

Candidates wishing to do Research at UAlberta

The candidate (international student or faculty member/manager) finds a UAlberta Host Supervisor and works with the Host Supervisor to determine a mutually agreed upon research project and duration (up to 6 months in length).

The Candidate must submit the 5 required application documents listed below to the UAlberta Host Supervisor. Note that the University of Alberta International will submit a signed copy of a Memorandum of Understanding or Agreement with the partner institution if one exists. Neither the Candidate nor the Host Supervisor need to obtain or provide this document.

The University of Alberta International will submit the application to the Government of Canada of behalf of the Host Supervisor and Candidate and will notify the Candidate and Host Supervisor of the results via e-mail.

Five Application Documents to Be Submitted by the Candidate:

If accepted by a University of Alberta Host Supervisor, candidates must provide the Host Supervisor with the following documents in one of these formats .pdf, .jpg, .doc, .docx, .txt or .gif. Each document must be smaller than 5 MB.

  1. Proof of citizenship: a copy of the candidate's passport photo page or national identity document with valid dates. Note: a driver's licence, permanent resident card, student card or baptism certificate is not accepted as proof of citizenship.
  2. Proof of full-time enrolment: a letter in English or French from the home institution, on official letterhead, dated within the last six months, confirming that the candidate is currently enrolled in a full-time program and will continue to be enrolled upon their return. Note: copies of transcripts, a student card or letter of admission are not acceptable (maximum one page).
  3. Letter of intent from the candidate: a letter in English or French from the candidate describing the nature of their research or studies to be undertaken and explaining the rationale for study in Canada and for the choice of institution, the program and the supervisor. The candidate must also indicate how the proposed program of study or research will relate to their future career (maximum one page).
  4. Letter of support from the home institution: a letter in English or French from the candidate's instructor, professor or international director on the institution's official letterhead explaining the nature of study and how the candidate and the home institution will benefit from this scholarship program (maximum one page).
  5. Privacy Notice Statement: a copy of the Privacy Notice Statement for non-Canadian participants signed by the candidate.

UAlberta Host Supervisors have two options to apply for this funding:

If the Host Supervisor has already identified a candidate and a research project, the Host Supervisor should provide UAI with a letter of invitation indicating willingness to support and mentor the visiting candidate and how the project helps support Canada’s objectives for the Americas: democratic governance, peace and security and prosperity in the region. The letter needs to have Departmental and Faculty approval and must include the signatures of the Supervisor, the Department Chair, and the Dean or Associate/Assistant Dean International of the Faculty.

In addition to this letter, the supervisor should submit the 5 required application documents listed above to University of Alberta International.

The deadline to submit all documents to the University of Alberta International is April 18, 2017.

Results, Invitation & Host Supervisor Responsibilities

UAI will notify Host Supervisors and Candidates of the results which are expected to be announced in June.

UAI will guide the host and the candidate through the invitation and immigration application process.

Candidates will normally be invited as Research Award Recipients and must obtain a work permit; see Academic Visitors Office. Exceptions: Students coming under an undergraduate or graduate exchange agreement will only be required to obtain a study permit.

The appropriate student category for invitation will be determined after nomination/application.

Candidate’s studies or research may commence as early as July 1, 2017 but no later than February 1, 2018.
