Beyond Transitions workshops and seminars

University of Alberta International (UAI) cooperates with other campus service providers to deliver annually approximately 30 workshops and seminars designed to assist students in furthering their educational, personal and career goals. 

Beyond Transitions workshops dates and times are listed in the events calendar. Below is a list of the typical workshops that are offered each year for International students at the U of A. If you have questions about any Beyond Transitions Workshops or if you have ideas/suggestions on workshops you would like to see offered please email advising@international.ualberta.ca


Immigration Clinics

Immigration Clinics will be held regularly at the International Centre and will address immigration issues and regulations relevant to International students in Canada such as Study Permits, Temporary Resident Visas, Work Options for Students, and more.

 

English Conversation Groups

For students who are seeking to improve their English conversational skills.No advance registration required.

 

Healthnuts Student Kitchens

(presented by Healthnuts Student Group) Learn how to cook healthful meals on a budget! Offered once per month, student kitchens are free of charge for University of Alberta students. At each kitchen, participants will help make a meal based on the theme of the kitchen, enjoy eating the meal, and learn about a nutrition topic presented by volunteers.

 

Study Strategies

(presented by Academic Support Centre) Did you want to get better grades in the second term? Do you know how to get through all your course work and actually learn something? Discover practical time management, note-taking, reading & memory strategies that will help you study more effectively at University. Bring your study questions and get the answers you’re looking for! 

 

How to Find a Job While Studying Full-Time

(presented by CAPS) Learn about opportunities for international students to work in Canada. Gain effective work search strategies.

 

 Not Plagiarism: Using the Words and Ideas of Others Correctly

(presented by Academic Support Centre) Part of academic writing is using the word and idea of others—through summarizing, paraphrasing, and quoting—correctly! In this 3 hour seminar, we will discuss the effective integration and how to avoid plagiarizing, unintentionally or otherwise. We will also consider some of the cultural aspects they may come into play when using sources.

 

Bringing Your Bilingual Skills into the Workplace

(presented by Yukari Meldrum who is a certified translator with the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Alberta)  Find out what it would mean to certify your translation and/or interpretation skills professionally. 

 

Communicating with Your Graduate Supervisor

(presented by Student OmbudsService) Explore some of the dynamics of the student-supervisor relationship and learn some techniques for fostering better communication.

 

Time Management

Start the term off right! Plan your study time so that you can get your schoolwork done and still have a social life. This session will focus on developing a weekly study schedule that includes time for reading, lab work, assignments, essays, and studying. Avoid falling behind in your studies by having a plan!

 

What You Can Do Now to Prepare for Post-Graduation Work

Find out about immigration regulations related to working in Canada after graduation and how to make the transitions easier. Learn about Canadian work culture, network with past international students who are now successful professionals and develop strategies to help you plan for a future post-graduation career in Canada. 

 

Landlord and Tenant Law

Moving out? Learn about the rights and responsibilities as a tenant and those of the landlord. This is an important information session especially if you will be moving out of your accommodations at the end of the term.

 

Canadian Income Tax for International Students

(Presented by the Canada Revenue Agency) Learn how to complete your Canadian Income Tax Return.

 

Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program

(WEBINAR presented by the Alberta Government) Attend one of these sessions to learn how the Immigrant Nominee Program can help you fast track the process to becoming a permanent resident after graduation.
