University of Alberta Research Experience (UARE)

What is the UARE program?

The University of Alberta Research Experience (UARE) is a research internship program allowing top senior undergraduate students from key partner universities to conduct research at UAlberta under the supervision of faculty members who are experts in their field.

Students gain hands-on, practical research experience in their academic discipline and receive a stipend of $6,000 CAD.

When are UARE placements available?

Research placements last a period of 12 weeks and typically take place:

  • January through March
  • May through July
  • July through September.

Exact internship dates are dependent on the flexibility of the supervising professor.

Eligibility

Ideal participants will meet the following criteria:

  • Senior undergraduate students (3rd or 4th year). Master's students from our partner institutions in Germany and integrated master's students from our Indian partner institutions are eligible.
  • Enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at a designated partner institution (see below).
  • Have a minimum Grade Point Average of 3.0 or B on a 4-point scale (or equivalent etc).
  • Past UARE participants are ineligible.

Program Highlights

University of Alberta International provides full support for participants before, during and after their placement. A formal one-on-one orientation, professional development seminars, academic networking opportunities, and a poster symposium are all offered to program participants.

Opportunities to participate in cultural and social events such as city festivals or day trips to nearby attractions are offered on a weekly basis. A trip to the Rocky Mountains is made available to every intern.

How to Apply

Follow these instructions to apply for an UARE internship:

  1. Review the available projects; UARE projects for the 2017 summer program will be posted on October 10th, 2016. Remember to check whether the project is open to students from your home institution (where you currently study), as well as whether your academic background relates to the area of research being pursued by the project.
  2. Complete the Application Form. You must indicate your project preferences, personal information, as well as provide contact information for 2 (two) academic references. These references will then receive a reference request email from the University of Alberta, which must be completed before the application deadline in order for your application to be considered.
    1. Applicants who are unable to access Google must fill out this PDF version of the Application Form, and email it, along with the rest of the required documents, to intern@ualberta.ca. All other applicants who are able to access google must fill out the Application Form using google forms (linked above).
  3. Email the following documents (in PDF format), and named in the following format: DocumentName_YourName.pdf (ex: CoverLetter_JaneSmith.pdf; OfficialTranscript_JaneSmith.pdf), to intern@ualberta.ca:
    1. Your Resume
    2. A scanned copy of your official transcripts. If your official transcripts are in a language other than English, please submit an official translated copy.
    3. For each project you are applying on, you must write a cover letter addressed to "Project Supervisor." Make sure that the title of the project is clearly indicated in the title of this document.

For Faculty: Post a Project & Host an Intern

Faculty members interested in hosting an intern during summer or winter should submit a proposal for a research project. Projects are accepted from all Faculties in all disciplines.

Why submit a proposal?

  • International exposure for your research.
  • Financial support for students ($2,000 commitment from the UAlberta faculty member or department; $4,000 is funded centrally for a total of $6,000). 
    • NOTICE for Arts professors: The Faculty of Arts has committed to funding up to 6 UARE research projects. Allocation is on a first come, first served basis.
  • Support for graduate student recruitment.
  • Research project is showcased at a poster symposium.
  • Administrative and program assistance provided by UAI.

Submitting a project

UAI is currently collecting projects from UAlberta faculty members for the 2017 summer UARE program. 

Complete the online form in order to submit a project. 

Please submit your summer projects by October 7th, 2016. 

Selection

U of A International will conduct the preliminary assessment of all applications after the November 4th deadline to ensure that they meet the minimum eligibility requirements (senior undergrad attending a partner institution, GPA of 3.0 or equivalent). The student’s home institution will then be asked to approve their application. 

On November 14th, UAlberta professors will be asked to rank all applicants that they would be interested in supervising (Deadline: November 25th). 

UAI will begin offering internships to selected applicants in December. Professors are copied on all offers and relevant correspondence with their candidates.
